It looks like Virginia will be home to the first Offshore Wind Turbine in the US! On March 27th, the Virginia Marine Resources Commission approved the construction of a 479 foot tall turbine in the lower Chesapeake Bay.
The construction is still subject to Army Corps and Coast Guard approval. Also, the VMRC made their approval conditional on completing a study of the potential underwater acoustic effects on marine life. That study seems like it is more for research purposes than anything else though. The turbine will be constructed by Gamesa Corp., a Spanish company that specializes in wind turbines and wind farm construction.
